The Kansas City Chiefs are on a roll. They defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 31-17 on Sunday, thanks to stellar performances by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. The Chiefs improved to 6-1 and maintained their lead in the AFC West.
Mahomes Throws Four Touchdowns, Breaks NFL Record
Mahomes was in MVP form, completing 28 of 38 passes for 356 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 31 yards and did not throw any interceptions. Mahomes broke the NFL record for the most passing touchdowns (24) in the first seven games of a season, surpassing Peyton Manning’s mark of 22 in 2013.
Mahomes spread the ball around, connecting with nine different receivers. His favorite target was Kelce, who had a career-high 12 catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Kelce became the first tight end in NFL history to have four consecutive seasons with at least 800 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
Kelce Excites Fans, Meets Taylor Swift
Kelce was not only impressed on the field but also off it. He excited fans by wearing a Taylor Swift shirt during the pregame warmups. He later met the pop star after the game and posed for a photo with her. Kelce said he was a big fan of Swift and that she was very nice and supportive of the Chiefs.
Chiefs Defense Holds Off Chargers
The Chiefs defense also did its part, holding off the Chargers offense led by rookie quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns but also had two costly interceptions. One of them was picked off by Tyrann Mathieu, who returned it 34 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. The other one was snatched by Daniel Sorensen, who sealed the game with a diving catch in the end zone with less than two minutes left.
The Chiefs’ defense also sacked Herbert three times and limited the Chargers to 94 rushing yards. The Chiefs have allowed only 18 points per game in their last four wins, after giving up 31 points per game in their first three games.
Chiefs Face Broncos Next Week
The Chiefs will look to extend their winning streak to seven games when they face the Denver Broncos next week. The Broncos are coming off a bye week and have a 3-3 record. The Chiefs have won nine straight games against the Broncos, including a 19-8 victory in Week 6. The Chiefs will try to sweep the season series and stay ahead of the Raiders, who are second in the division with a 4-3 record.
The game will be played on Sunday, October 29 at 3:25 p.m. CDT at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. You can watch and listen to the game on CBS or KCFX-FM (101.1 FM) respectively.
